During spring 2026 this project was carried out as my bachelor’s thesis in interior architecture and is part of the development of Hellnäs Marina. It includes the transformation of a reused modular building into a restaurant and service facilities for the camping area and guest harbour, as well as work with the surrounding outdoor environment through outdoor lighting.
The building is a former daycare from Espoo, transported to Ostrobothnia and adapted for a new purpose. This has been an important starting point and has influenced both the layout and the overall design.
The project covers both interior design and aspects of the outdoor environment, with a focus on creating a functional and coherent environment for different types of users. The restaurant is designed as a flexible and social space with clear circulation and varied seating, while the service space is adapted for practical use and high demand.
A key part of the project has been working with lighting, both indoors and across the entire outdoor area. The outdoor lighting has been designed to improve orientation, safety and atmosphere, while existing fixtures have been reused and integrated where possible.
The thesis also includes a theoretical focus on room acoustics, which has been applied in the design where possible within the scope of the project, through material choices and spatial planning.
The result shows how an existing building and its surroundings can be developed into a cohesive and functional environment, with a strong connection to the site.

Design Concept
The concept is based on a balance between raw and warm elements. Materials, colours and lighting work together to create a calm and welcoming atmosphere. The design is inspired by the marina surroundings, with natural materials and soft tones that reflect the environment.

The drawing illustrates the main functions of the activity, with a clear divison between guest areas facing the seaside and service areas towards the back.

The plan shows the furniture layout for a typical everyday seating arrangement. Indoors approx. 60 seats and outdoors approx. 145 seats.

The plan shows the furniture layout when the entire space is booked for larger gatherings or events. The layout is flexible and can be adapted as needed. For example, the room divider can be removed to create a more open space.

Entrance / Cloakroom
The entrance creates a welcoming first impression, with a clear view towards the bar, which also functions as a reception. At the same time, the space is kept calm to highlight the views towards the large windows and the sea.
The cloakroom is placed in an open but slightly separated solution, with a focus on function, comfort and hygiene.
Lounge Area
The lounge area is designed as a place to sit with a view of the sea. A built-in seating solution saves space and creates a natural spot for waiting, having a drink or socializing by the fireplace.
The relief in the panel wall interprets the coastline and connects the space to the identity of the site.

Bar
The bar is designed as the visual focal point and clear central element in the space. A lowered ceiling defines the area and creates a calmer atmosphere.
Marble tiles, copper details and custom joinery reinforce the concept. The wave shape in front of the bar desk connects to the sea and reflects the identity of the restaurant.
Restrooms
The restrooms are designed in the same style as the rest of the restaurant to create a cohesive whole. Custom toilet units in high-pressure laminate were chosen to save space and a specially designed vanity discreetly integrates waste handling.
Reused copper fixtures add warmth and strengthen the identity of the space.
Service facilities for camping and guest harbour
Design Concept
The concept for the service area focuses on function, durability and clarity. The design is inspired by the marina setting and uses simple, robust materials suited for heavy use. The aim is to create a space that is easy to understand, practical and easy to maintain.
Service Kitchen
The serve kitchen was designed as a functional and pleasant service area, with the same standard and expression as the rest of the building. Two water points were added to make it easier for use by camping and boat guests.
